Number the stars

Dear diary,

My name is annemarie, and today my friend Ellen and I were racing down the sidewalk, because we have an athletic meet at school on friday. I was then stopped by two guys that were tall and strong. We called one of the soldiers a giraffe, because his neck was long. He then questioned why we were running. We told him we have an athletic meet on friday. He poked my bag with his rifle, then he asked what was in there. I replied, “school books”. He then asked our names, so we told him. He then said we needed to get home and to walk like civilized people. We then went home and my little sister kirsti told our moms. We were gonna hide it from then, because we thought it wasn’t a big deal.

* A couple days later *

It was a good thing kirsti told our mom, because the germans have a problem with the jews. Ellen is a jew, so we have to hide her while her parents are gone. Her parents had to leave with my uncle  peter, so they can be safe. If the germans find her or her parents they’re gonna take them away to a concentration camp. Ellen is acting like my sister if the germans get in our house, so they can’t tell if she’s a jew. When she was at my house i was thinking what if they take my best friend? What if I never see her again? I was so scared.

sincerely, annemarie
